CINCINNATI, OH – November 6, 2023 – Ethicon*, a Johnson & Johnson MedTech** company, today debuted an AI-powered Surgical Simulation Platform that supports skill development in current and future surgeons at the American Association of Gynecological Laparoscopists (AAGL) Global Congress. The technology ushers in a new era in surgical training by leveraging artificial intelligence (AI), and augmented reality (AR) powered trainings, real-time data, and tactical feedback.
While demand for surgical training remains high, access to quality education can be challenging due to staffing shortages, time constraints, and space limitations. The new Ethicon Laparoscopic Skills Training Platform offers a connected digital learning experience that is highly portable, adaptable to the learner’s evolving circumstances, and effortlessly integrated into their everyday quality education and training routines.
“We understand the challenges faced by today’s surgeons and surgical residents in their professional education journey, including issues related to accessibility and the vital tactile feedback needed for the development of cognitive and psychomotor skills,” said Vishnu Kalra, president of Ethicon U.S. “This understanding drove our partnership and the creation of an innovative solution that leverages technology to address these barriers and enhance the learning experience to improve patient outcomes.”
The Ethicon Laparoscopic Skills Training Platform is the latest example of the company’s commitment to delivering personalized and innovative education, expanding reach, and deepening knowledge beyond traditional training experiences. The platform has built-in learning courses that combine tactile skill building with intelligent learning technology to provide evidence-based cognitive and psychomotor skill development. It also includes fundamental surgical training tasks for individual surgeons to hone in on essential skills and techniques as the device detects shapes, orientations, and much more to provide real-time, objective feedback.
Ethicon will debut the platform at the annual AAGL meeting in Nashville, TN. The company plans to pilot the program across academic health systems in the U.S.
