From medical advances that tackle the world’s most pressing healthcare challenges to an internal culture focused on encouraging new and creative ideas, Johnson & Johnson has always put innovation front and center.
For company leaders, it’s not just a trendy buzzword: A dedication to innovation has been instrumental since Johnson & Johnson’s founding in 1886. Innovation is also built into Our Credo, the mission statement that has guided the evolution of the company for more than 80 years.
Now, that innovative drive has been formally recognized. Today, Johnson & Johnson was named to Fortune’s second annual ranking of America’s Most Innovative Companies. The list consisted of 200 companies, and Johnson & Johnson was ranked in the top 20.
It’s an honor the company also earned in 2023, when Fortune put Johnson & Johnson on its inaugural most innovative companies list.
What makes a company innovative
To come up with the list, Fortune partnered with data firm Statista, which compiled an initial list of more than 25,000 companies in the United States. Each company was evaluated with three important pillars in mind:
• Product innovation: how product and service design stand up in terms of usability and uniqueness, as well as innovations in research and development.
• Process innovation: how innovative the company is in sourcing and production, marketing, sales and support.
• Innovation culture: the extent to which a company internally fosters a spirit of entrepreneurship and creativity, allowing for the implementation of new ideas.
Johnson & Johnson came in strong for all criteria. The company is focused on developing cutting-edge healthcare solutions across its MedTech and Innovative Medicine businesses and has a deep commitment to making and delivering products that empower patients. And its guiding principles encourage novel solutions to advance health equity, sustainability and global health.
The company is no stranger to lists that honor top companies. For the 22nd year in a row, the company was recently named a 2024 Fortune World’s Most Admired Company.
