Empowering employees: We’re encouraging diversity in STEM careers

Diverse perspectives, cultures and experiences have helped spark transformative healthcare solutions at Johnson & Johnson for more than 135 years. Our workforce is one of our greatest assets, reflecting differences in skills, regional and industry experience, background, race, ethnicity, gender and other unique characteristics. We remain committed to nurturing a culture that embraces this diversity, promotes equity and fosters inclusion.

In 2021, we launched the Johnson & Johnson STEM Scholars Programme, an exciting and innovative scheme to encourage a more diverse healthcare workforce by breaking down barriers and creating access to careers in STEM and life sciences for high potential Black, Asian and Minority Ethnic (BAME) scholars in the UK. The five-year programme, championed by the Johnson & Johnson Innovation Centre in London, supports 25 students aged 16-17 years for two years in Phase one, and then in Phase two 10 carefully selected students participate for a further three years during their time at university.

The idea is to help students to develop a better understanding of the healthcare industry and access to STEM careers, supporting them as their career development needs evolve from school, through university and into a career with the necessary skills and leadership potential to succeed. Students gain valuable experience and tools to pursue their chosen career through workshops, work placements and paid internships at our UK locations with a view to later facilitating connections to other more established J&J programs like WiSTEM2D. In addition, all students are supported by a J&J mentor to help guide them on their career journey. 25 mentors and 60 volunteers from J&J are engaged in the programme to date.

In 2023, our first cohort of students graduated from Phase one, and we invited 10 to join Phase two at our London Centre, which includes leadership workshops and continued mentoring.

And it works for us too. Programmes like this are key to fostering a more inclusive future workforce that reflects the diversity of our patients and customers.
