Environmental sustainability

At Johnson & Johnson, our environmental stewardship is guided by our Credo and inspired by our Purpose to profoundly change the trajectory of health for humanity. We know that human health and environmental health are fundamentally linked, and healthy people need a healthy planet.

Our Credo

“We must maintain in good order the property we are privileged to use, protecting the environment and natural resources.”
— Johnson & Johnson Credo

Our approach to environmental sustainability

We continually strive to improve the environmental footprint of our operations, our products, and our value chain. Building on more than two decades of climate action, we are committed to sourcing 100% renewable electricity and reducing emissions across our global operations, while also working with our suppliers to do the same.

In addition to our climate goals, we also have a longer-term ambition to reach net zero emissions across our value chain by 2045.

Our approach in Switzerland

We align our work with our environmental, social, and governance (ESG) strategy to improve access and affordability, create healthier communities, and put a healthy mind, body and environment within reach of everyone, everywhere.
Decarbonize our operations and our value chain

Decarbonize our operations and our value chain

In Switzerland, we engaged in emissions reduction more than 20 years ago through voluntary commitments. In 2018, we switched to renewable electricity across all Swiss locations with operational control, and by 2022, all our European sites1 achieved 100 % renewable electricity.

Johnson & Johnson MedTech

Medtech.png
Johnson & Johnson MedTech is committed to shaping a sustainable and value-based healthcare system through sustainable solutions, technologies, and products. With around 30% of hospital waste coming from operating rooms, there is an important opportunity to advance recycling processes.

To help reduce medical waste, we are working with hospitals to recycle select components from medical instruments designed for single use while digitally capturing and communicating the environmental impact of salvaged.

From our first pilot in 2021 to collaborating with over 50 Swiss hospitals in 2024, we facilitated the collection of over 9,600 Kg of materials and the recycling of over 8,000 kg3, including metal, aluminum, and plastic.

In further collaboration with our recycling partner Mr. Green, 20 tons of non-contaminated materials are being recycled from operating rooms every year.

In 2022 we launched Safe Returns in Switzerland, a program designed with patients and planet in mind. At the Reuters Pharma Awards, the Swiss initiative was named the winner in the “Sustainability” category.

We invested in a facility in Switzerland that, when operational, should allow us to disassemble devices received through Safe Returns in Europe and then recycle some of the materials from the devices.

Together for a healthy Switzerland

We understand that it requires collaboration to accelerate planetary health. In addition to our subject matter experts driving sustainability within MedTech and Innovative Medicine, we partner cross-sector to scale up our impact and progress towards the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development. Together with our partners, we collaborate towards finding solutions to sustainability challenges in healthcare, recycle and reuse precious materials from electronics, co-develop decarbonization roadmaps, or exchange learnings and successes with other organizations, supporting the sustainability journey.

Eliminating food waste

One example is the food waste tracking solution offered by our facilities management partner. This was first launched in 2019 and since then, it was expanded across all the J&J Switzerland canteens. During the first 5 years, the program has prevented over 31’000 kgs of food waste from occurring and avoided 219 tons of CO2.
